How do you learn new English words? Here are some suggestions for increasing your English vocabulary.
  • Read Everything: The more you read, the more you learn. Read books, short stories, magazines, and newspapers as often as you can.
  • Look it up: Keep a dictionary handy. You can use any kind you prefer (print or online). Every time you find a new word, look it up in the dictionary. Try using an online visual dictionary.
  • Keep a List: Keep a vocabulary list and always add to it.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice: Use the word in English conversation at least 3 times in the next week.
  • Challenge Yourself: Set a goal of learning 1 new word a day.
  • Play Games: There are many word games out there that you can use to learn and practice new words.
  • Learn Word Parts:  Take the time to learn root words (words that are used as base to create new words). You can also learn prefixes (word parts found at beginning of a word) and suffixes (words parts found at the end of a word).
  • Take a quiz: Test yourself every now and then using online tools that will quiz you on the meaning of words. (I will post some online vocabulary tools very soon.)
