English idioms, proverbs, and expressions are an important part of everyday English. They come up all the time in both written and spoken English. Because idioms don't always make sense literally, you'll need to familiarize yourself with the meaning and usage of each idiom. That may seem like a lot of work, but learning idioms is fun, especially when you compare English idioms to the idioms in your own language. To read more about idioms, go to English Idioms at EF.edu

To learn more about idioms, you can also go to this Idioms Guide.

There are many lists of idioms available for your review online. Here a few you might wish to look over:

  • Dave's ESL Cafe
  • Essential English Idioms (Medium.com)
  • Idioms Worksheets by Category (eslgames.com)
  • Useful North American idioms

Below, you will find an "award winning" video about idioms. Enjoy!

When learning a language, a dictionary is an absolute must. For many years, when it came to using a dictionary, you only had a couple of options, and all them involved carrying around a big, thick book everywhere you went. Today, however, there are many dictionaries online that you can use from your computer or even cellphone.

But which online dictionary should I use? There are so many to choose from.

Well, the folks at waketech.com have an answer for you.

Vocabulary Strategies

How do you learn new English words? Here are some suggestions for increasing your English vocabulary.
  • Read Everything: The more you read, the more you learn. Read books, short stories, magazines, and newspapers as often as you can.
  • Look it up: Keep a dictionary handy. You can use any kind you prefer (print or online). Every time you find a new word, look it up in the dictionary. Try using an online visual dictionary.
  • Keep a List: Keep a vocabulary list and always add to it.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice: Use the word in English conversation at least 3 times in the next week.
  • Challenge Yourself: Set a goal of learning 1 new word a day.
  • Play Games: There are many word games out there that you can use to learn and practice new words.
  • Learn Word Parts:  Take the time to learn root words (words that are used as base to create new words). You can also learn prefixes (word parts found at beginning of a word) and suffixes (words parts found at the end of a word).
  • Take a quiz: Test yourself every now and then using online tools that will quiz you on the meaning of words. (I will post some online vocabulary tools very soon.)
